There are many shops on the Schiedamseweg and Mathenesserweg. A large part of Delfshaven was destroyed and rebuilt during the bombing. So you will find a surprising combination of historic buildings and new construction. Characteristic is Historisch Delfshaven with many monumental buildings. Hillegersberg breathes history with the old village and its cosy shops. The Bergse Voor- en Achterplas lake has lovely little harbours. Schiebroek is a green neighbourhood that is also surrounded by various parks. On the north side you will find single-family houses, in the south flats and flats. From Rubroek, the centre is within easy reach, a district that was completely rebuilt after the war.
Young and green IJsselmonde
People who live in IJsselmonde like to live in a quiet, green yet urban environment. With the Maasstad Hospital, Lombardijen Station and Keizerswaard shopping centre, it is nice and quiet here, while there are still plenty of facilities. Beverwaard is the family neighbourhood of Ijselmonde. In this accessible and safe neighbourhood, there is a lot of housing choice and the facilities are excellent. Lombardijen is a lot greener. Here, young and older people live together peacefully. You will find mainly low-rise buildings.
Charlois or Sjaarloos?
Charlois was soon bastardised by the Rotterdammers and pronounced Sjaarloos. Harbour barons and workers went to live near the harbours. That is why you will find both luxury buildings and working-class houses here. Special in urban Charlois are the Charloisse Lagedijk and the Smitshoekseweg, where it is almost village-like. In Zuidplein, everything is at hand. The shopping centre, a theatre, events location Ahoy and the Ikazia Hospital. There are mainly flats. In the garden village Heijplaat, there is green living between the Rotterdam harbours. This village was built for the employees of the Rotterdamsche Droogdokmaatschappij (RDM). You can almost taste the history here. Landzicht, on the other hand, is a working-class neighbourhood with small houses. A village atmosphere and historic houses can again be found in Noord-Kethel. It is nice and quiet here, with a recreational lake and lots of greenery in the vicinity. The same applies to Zestienhoven and Schieveen, located on the edge of the city.
The Development of Feijenoord
The song of the Kuip regularly blows over the Feijenoord district. The Rotterdam football club owes its name to this district. It is a lively and multicultural area that is on the rise. Symbol of this area is the Kop van Zuid, which connects North and South. Here you will find many high-rise buildings with luxury flats overlooking the river Maas. However, there are also quiet residential areas with lots of green. Near the Kop van Zuid is the Noordereiland. It is a unique piece of Rotterdam that is loved by young people thanks to the old buildings that overlook the water. Just as special is Katendrecht, popularly known as "De Kaap". Many educational facilities, Fenix Food Factory, the SS Rotterdam and Theatre Walhalla make it a very popular neighbourhood.
